How do I let this friend know I don't like the way he "comments" on my accent
I've recently moved to London for my masters and still adjusting to my life around here. I've made some friends from classes and they're all from different backgrounds and cultures. English is not my first language, so I'm not that confident speaking English to begin with. What bothers me is that whenever I speak up in class and the professor asks around for feedback, this one friend (?) likes to point out how my English accent is difficult to understand. My first instinct was to say sorry because I felt like I made the class wasted time. But looking back I shouldnt have. I mean... it's not a very nice thing to say. But in times like this I also don't know what to say, so I just laugh along and say sorry. But he made similar comments a couple more times and it's starting to get a bit hurtful now :( I wonder if this is a cultural thing or the guy just lacks common sense. If anyone has any advice on how to handle this kind of situation please let me know. I'm also not a confrontational person so an approach that doesn't require direct confrontation is best. Thank you. — First posted on the BoundaryLab forum by Anonymous, 16 July 2025. Kept here with the name they chose.
